Martin Rogers: Cristiano Ronaldo's chance to 'catch' Messi

Feb 13, 2013 3:04:00 AM
With Real Madrid set to face Manchester United in a rare high-profile match in February, the Portuguese star has something to prove.
It is rare that soccer's biggest showdown in any given season should come in early February rather than the end of May, but Wednesday's match up between Cristiano Ronaldo's Real Madrid and Manchester United comfortably fits that lofty billing.

Never mind that the clash will take place in the round of 16 of the Champions League and not the final, nor that this week's installment is only the first segment of a home-and-home contest that will be decided over 180 minutes, across two countries and won't anoint a victor until the beginning of next month.

Soccer needs a juicy storyline to spice up a season that has stagnated somewhat in both of its two most prominent domestic competitions, the English Premier League and Spain's La Liga, due to the utter dominance of United in the former and Madrid's failure to keep pace with its hated rival Barcelona in the latter.

Just as well then, that it doesn't get much tastier than Ronaldo, the second-best soccer player on the planet but the undisputed champion at dividing opinion, squaring off against the team that signed him as a teenager, nurtured him to greatness, then sold off him for a world record fee of $131 million.

Even in the United States the buzz has not gone unrecognized and Fox Soccer is expecting its largest ever audience for a Champions League broadcast other than the final – and will use the excitable Gus Johnson to call the game.

[Visit World Soccer on Yahoo! Sports]

Yet it is not just the media corps and fans searching for some mid-season drama who are drumming up the hype machine ahead of Wednesday's first leg at Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu Stadium; the importance of the outcome is mightily tangible for both clubs.

United began its season primarily seeking to avenge its heartbreaking surrender of the EPL crown to local rival Manchester City last season. Mega-spending City entered this campaign threatening to become England's dominant club once again, and so swift and defiant has been the United response that it has all but sewn up this season's title already, opening up a 12-point gap over City with just a third of the fixtures remaining.

Attention then, can switch to the Champions League with near totality, a tournament United has not won since 2008 when, you guessed it, Ronaldo capped off a spectacular season by helping the team lift the trophy.

United head coach Sir Alex Ferguson shows no sign of slowing down but it must be remembered he is now 71 and reality dictates that he has a finite number of opportunities left to seize this coveted prize. With one of the strongest and most cohesive squads of his 26-year reign in Manchester, and the likely luxury of being able to rest key players during EPL games later in the season, this may be his best chance.

First though, Ronaldo stands in the way with a point of his own to prove.

The Portuguese forward looked ready to become the player of his generation at the time he left United in that blockbuster transfer and has maintained an almost absurdly high standard with 182 goals in 179 games for Madrid.

Yet he has still been overshadowed in Spain by Barcelona's Lionel Messi, who recently added his fourth consecutive world player of the year award and is already hailed as one of soccer's historical greats at the age of 25. Nothing short of a Champions League title would be enough to give Ronaldo a chance at wresting that individual crown from Messi, and even then perhaps not.

For all the importance and the anticipation, there is nothing but friendly platitudes bouncing back and forwards this week, with Ferguson insisting that Ronaldo's improvement since he left United has been such that it would now cost "hundreds of millions" to buy him back.

Ronaldo, who by many of his off-field antics has earned a reputation as a not particularly pleasant individual, nevertheless had words of surprising warmth for Ferguson and his former employers.

"It was a fantastic part of my life there," he told British reporters last weekend. "Maybe it was the time I enjoyed my football the most. It was a dream.

"I arrived at United aged just 18 and [Ferguson] taught me how to grow up properly in the football world. He was like a father to me."

Perhaps Ronaldo's mood had been softened by his brilliant hat trick against Sevilla in Madrid's 4-1 win on the weekend, or even the rumors in the Spanish tabloids that his supermodel girlfriend Irina Shayk was planning a surprise visit (not so surprising anymore) for Valentine's Day.

But he will be acutely aware of the pressure upon his shoulders this week as Madrid tries to resurrect something from an otherwise doomed campaign, with Barcelona 16 points ahead in La Liga and the future of Madrid head coach José Mourinho very much in limbo.

Ronaldo's ability to step up when it matters most has often been called into question and he has become regularly agitated at aspersions cast on his mental mettle. Wednesday, and the return leg in Manchester 20 days later, offers the perfect opportunity to quiet those doubting voices in a contest that shapes up as the best 2013 has to offer.

Conte: Juventus will not underestimate Celtic

Conte: Juventus will not underestimate Celtic

The successful trainer has made it clear that the Hoops will not be pushovers, and says he dreams of going all the way in Europe
Bet: Returns: Dundee Utd XI £50.00 Draw £37.50 Celtic £16.70 Bet365
Antonio Conte has insisted that Juventus will not underestimate Celtic in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie at Parkhead on Tuesday evening.

The Serie A champions are seen as the sky-high favourites to reach the quarter-finals at the expense of the Scottish giants, but Conte has stressed that a tough task awaits the Bianconeri.

"We’ve got great respect for Celtic and won’t underestimate them. They’re back in the Champions League and, like us, are outsiders who want to go as far as possible," Conte said at a press conference.

"They’re a physical team and score a high percentage of their goals from set pieces. We kept a close eye on Celtic’s Champions League progress during the group stages.

"Home advantage has been very important for them. The stadium will act as their 12th man. Not many teams could manage to beat Barcelona at home and lose by a whisker at the Nou Camp.

"It’s a dream to be back in the Champions League and our dream is now to claim a place in the quarter-finals."

Tuesday's match is scheduled to kick off at 20:45CET.

Serie A Round 24 Results

Serie A Round 24 Results: Sampdoria ruin Andreazzoli's Roma debut

In a weekend of Italian action that will not live long in the memory, Palermo needed a late equaliser to salvage a point against Pescara, while Udinese edged past Torino

PARMA 0-0 GENOA

Parma somehow ended a run of two straight defeats in Serie A against a resurgent Genoa after they escaped with a goalless draw at the Tardini.

Despite a late charge by the Gialloblu, the visitors were left cursing their luck as Andrea Bertolacci hit the bar twice from shooting positions. The midfielder was first denied from the edge of the box, before his strike from a corner took a deflection off Marco Borriello.

Nonetheless, a point was enough for Genoa to extend their unbeaten start to life under Davide Ballardini. Parma, meanwhile, sit ninth and close the gap on Roma to two points.

ATALANTA 0-0 CATANIA
It was a tale of wasted opportunities in Bergamo on Sunday as neither Atalanta nor Catania could find the breakthrough at the Azzurri d'Italia.

Lucas Castro and Gonzalo Bergessio were presented with their fair share of chances to hand the Sicilians all three points, but wayward finishing was to be the name of the game, while Giacomo Bonaventura proved to be the hosts' biggest threat.

The result leaves Atalanta in 14th place, but Catania drop down to eighth following Udinese's win over Torino.

PALERMO 1-1 PESCARA

Palermo began life under new boss Alberto Malesani in spirited fashion, coming back from behind to draw 1-1 with Pescara at the Renzo Barbera on Sunday.

On 73 minutes, the Delfini - keen to end a run of four straight losses - took the lead via Birkir Bjarnason's header from a free kick.

But just seven minutes later Diego Fabbrini linked up with defender Ezequiel Munoz to earn the Sicilians a
point and ensure the former Fiorentina, Parma and Bologna coach avoided defeat on his debut.

Despite remaining bottom of the table, Palermo are now level on points with Siena, but Pescara miss the chance to jump out of the relegation places.

SAMPDORIA 3-1 ROMA

Aurelio Andreazzoli's reign as Roma head coach got off to the worst possible start following a 3-1 defeat to Sampdoria - the Giallorossi's fourth loss in their last six league matches.

Ten minutes into the second half, debutant attacker Gianluca Sansone, who sealed a deadline-day switch from Torino, drilled in a cross for Marcelo Estigarribia to turn in.

The capital outfit then thought they had worked their way back into contention when Pablo Osvaldo won a penalty following Daniele Gastaldello's foul in the box. The Italy striker, however, failed to find the target.

It was fitting then that Sampdoria would leave Roma to rue their missed spot-kick by netting a second goal via Sansone, although goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg was not entirely blameless in its build-up.

Roma were offered hope when Erik Lamela coolly struck home a left-footed volley, but man of the moment Mauro Icardi flicked in the clincher for the Blucerchati.

The match sadly ended on a sour note as Sampdoria coach Delio Rossi was given his marching orders for an alleged middle-fingered salute towards Argentine defender Nicolas Burdisso, but his team climb to 11th in the table.

The visitors, meanwhile, fall 10 points behind arch-rivals Lazio in the last Champions League play-off spot and remain winless in the league in 2013.
BOLOGNA 1-1 SIENA

A closely-contested match in Emilia-Romagna saw Bologna and Siena play out a 1-1 draw which does neither side any favours in their quest for survival.

The Tuscans, who would be three points clear of the relegation zone if not for their points deduction, went ahead on 33 minutes when Innocent Emeghara met Alessio Sestu's cross.

However, Stefano Pioli's troops were not to be defeated on home soil and Alessandro Diamanti's flighted free kick was turned in at the back post by Panagiotis Kone.
The Rossoblu sit in 15th spot and are now unbeaten in three games, but Siena stay second from bottom in the table.

UDINESE 1-0 TORINO
Udinese continued their rise up the Serie A table after they narrowly overcame Torino 1-0 at the Friuli on Sunday to bolster their hopes of a European place.

The winning goal came early in the first half when Antonio Di Natale's shot rebounded off Granata goalkeeper Jean-Francois Gillet and into the path of Roberto Pereyra, who made no mistake from close range.

Torino, who suffered the misfortune of seeing coach Giampiero Ventura sent off for dissent towards the referee, drop to 12th position. Udinese, meanwhile, climb to seventh

Eriksen rejects new Ajax deal, reveals Overmars

Eriksen rejects new Ajax deal, reveals Overmars

Christian Eriksen has informed Ajax that he does not want to sign a new contract with the club, according to technical director Marc Overmars.

The 20-year-old, who has scored nine and assisted 13 goals for his side this season, has refused to extend his current deal which runs out in the summer of 2014.

And Overmars told sporten.dk that Eriksen is looking at options elsewhere - with Goal.com exclusively revealing last year that Tottenham were keen on the midfielder.

Overmars said: "Christian has informed us that he doesn’t want to sign a new contract right now. I think he and his agent want to see what opportunities present themselves this summer."

Despite speculation linking Eriksen to a number of clubs around Europe, Overmars is keen for the youngster to further his progression at the Amsterdam ArenA for a few more years before moving to another club.

He added: "We want him to stay here for at least two more years, but the day he leaves us, he will be ready to play for the very best. He’s a player even the biggest clubs in the world could do with having in their squad."

Manchester United 2-0 Everton: Giggs & Van Persie move hosts 12 points clear

Manchester United 2-0 Everton: Giggs & Van Persie move hosts 12 points clear

First-half goals from the Welshman and the Dutchman were enough for the Red Devils to extend their lead at the top of the table with a comfortable win at Old Trafford

Manchester United took a giant stride towards a 20th league title with victory over Everton that sent them 12 points clear at the top of the table with just 12 games to play.
Bet: Returns: Real Madrid £16.70 Draw £40.00 Man Utd. £47.50 Bet365

Ryan Giggs' early goal was followed by Robin van Persie's 19th league strike of the season as United collected a routine three points at Old Trafford.

With a tricky Champions League trip to Real Madrid looming in midweek, Sir Alex Ferguson made three changes as Nemanja Vidic, Phil Jones and Giggs all came into the team.

Everton, meanwhile, brought Phil Neville back but also required a late defensive change after Sylvain Distin dropped out in the warm-up and was replaced by Johnny Heitinga.

The hosts began the game strongly and might have taken the lead as early as the 10th minute. Rafael and Wayne Rooney combined to free Van Persie, who rounded goalkeeper Tim Howard but could only hit the post with the goal gaping.

Minutes later, however, Giggs made no mistake, opening the scoring and continuing his outstanding record of scoring in every Premier League season.

Antonio Valencia's pass was headed down by Van Persie into the Welshman’s path and he calmly took a touch before slotting it past Howard and in off the post.

Yet Everton came right back into the game and could have equalised on the half-hour mark. A great piece of play saw Steven Pienaar find Leon Osman and his fierce strike was creeping into the corner before a flying David de Gea pushed it around the post.

From the resulting corner United required another superb piece of defending to preserve their lead as Vidic bravely threw himself in front of Kevin Mirallas' shot when the Belgian looked set to fire home an equaliser.

Mirallas then almost set up Victor Anichebe. His cross from the right, however, was just behind the striker, who had got in front of Jonny Evans, allowing Rafael to hack it out of play for a corner.

The visitors were made to rue those misses too as United doubled their lead right at the end of the half. Again Rafael was involved, dinking the ball through to Van Persie, who beat the offside trap, rounded Howard again and this time made no mistake, despite the valiant attempts of Heitinga on the line.

The second half was a more subdued affair, with chances few and far between, and United having the better of the opportunities.

A Van Persie corner from the right was met by Evans, whose effort was saved by Howard, before the ball came back out to the defender causing an almighty goalmouth scramble which somehow the Toffees managed to clear for another corner.

The ball in was again not dealt with fully by the visitors and headed out only as far as Cleverley, who smashed a superb volley goalwards only to be denied by a magnificent save by Howard.

As time ticked away Van Persie dragged a shot wide after being set up by Giggs, before De Gea saved well from Jelavic but there was to be no late show from the Toffees this time as United stood firm to take all three points.

I still want to play for England, says West Ham midfielder Joe Cole

I still want to play for England, says West Ham midfielder  Joe Cole

Feb 10, 2013 11:40:00 AM
The 31-year-old is happy to be back at his first club, West Ham, and believes that he could still have a role to play in Roy Hodgson's national team despite fierce competition
Bet: Returns: Aston Villa £25.00 Draw £33.00 West Ham United £27.50 Bet365
West Ham midfielder Joe Cole still believes that he has a role to play for England and will not give up on his dream of representing his nation once again, despite strong competition for places in Roy Hodgson's side.

The 31-year-old attacker has been in good form since returning to his boyhood club after his deal with Liverpool ended, with his crossing skills providing manager Sam Allardyce with an alternative option to the Hammers' more direct style.

And, although Cole thinks that midfield rivals Jack Wilshere and Tom Cleverley are "world-class" after the Three Lions impressively beat Brazil 2-1 on Wednesday night, he feels that he can still perform at the highest level for his country.

"[Wilshere and Cleverley] are fantastic players," he told the Daily Telegraph. "Wilshere is top-drawer, world-class. I was thinking 'how am I going to get in this team?' Because I still want to play for England.

"It's a long time since I played and I know the odds are against me because I've been away for so long. But I enjoy the challenge. That's the masochist in me."

Cole is happy with how his career has panned out despite struggling at Anfield but still has the hunger for more success - and feels that Allardyce is the right man to help him and the club progress.

"If my career stopped tomorrow then I would be happy with everything that I've achieved but I've still got the desire to do more, play more games, score more goals, win more trophies," he enthused. "We can win the League Cup, FA Cup and Sam Allardyce is an ambitious man.

"He has come here because he wants to do well and maybe one day get the England job. You can feel that everything's pointing in the right direction for the club."

Though he is looking to his future prospects, the playmaker is happy to recall his astonishing goal against Sweden in World Cup 2006 as a highlight of his career.

"When I scored the goal against Sweden, a goal that's gone down as one of the great goals, afterwards I just gave my shirt to one of the Swedish players," Cole added.

"And JT [John Terry] said to me: 'What are you doing? With that goal you scored you can't just give your shirt away!' and I'm like 'oh, no,' and went and got the shirt back.

"I hadn't thought of it as a career-defining moment but now when people think of me in an England shirt they think of that goal. Like Michael Owen against Argentina, [Steven] Gerrard against Germany. But as you get older you learn to appreciate what you've done."

Dante: Neymar enquired about Bayern Munich

Dante: Neymar enquired about Bayern Munich

Feb 9, 2013 11:00:00 PM
The defender admitted to having a conversation with his young compatriot regarding the Bavarian giants, days after the Santos star made public his interest in a move to Germany
Bayern Munich centre-back Dante has revealed Santos striker Neymar enquired about the club during the pair's time together on international duty for Brazil.

Dante claimed the 21-year-old forward asked about life at die Roten, thus confirming his interest of plying his trade in the Bundesliga.

"I told Neymar there is nothing better than Bayern Munich," Dante told Sky Sport.

"I said it would be a great club for him."

Neymar, who pledged his future to his boyhood club in the short term, is also wanted by Barcelona and Real Madrid, but blew the race for his signature wide open after admitting interest in the Bavarians.

The sought-after 21-year-old is already one of the hottest names circulating around the European transfer market, after his exploits for both club and country.
